Any ideas/correlations on this observation between mathematical ability and girls who wearing makeup?

Asked by Cheech at 16 May,2013
Ever since I've gotten into courses for my major/minor (about 2 years now) I noticed I was the only girl wearing makeup in any of my classes. As a Mathematics major and Statistics minor, females are already the minority in all my classes. So the class population usually begins with about 60% male, 40% female (not too big of a gap) - but out of the students that make it to the final exam, about 10-20% are female. So females are more likely to drop the Mathematical/Statistical courses, but of the females who dropped were ALL of the females who wore makeup. And I mean it: in EVERY SINGLE ONE of my mathematic/statistic courses I’ve taken over the past 2 years, EVERY SINGLE GIRL that wore makeup dropped (except for me). I have yet to make a correlation, any thoughts? This doesn't mean that the girls that passed the courses I was in were unkept or ugly. Most dressed nicely, and were just naturally beautiful - they just didn't wear makeup. And I don't find it weird that a female would choose not to wear makeup - but weird that all the girls that DID choose to wear makeup didn't not pass.

I just think they have less to worry about when they don't wear makeup. Girls that wear makeup usually worry about more things than girls that don't, due to their outward appearance and how they think they look. I'm not saying every girl who wears makeup is insecure about their looks because their are women who wear makeup because they just want to. But all in all, girls who wear makeup worry more about things. While you wear makeup, you worry about how it looks on you and whether or not your appearance is fine instead of fully concentrating on math.

  1. You know, now that I think of it.. I never wore any make up, not even a mascara, untill I got to university and I excelled at Math. But when I started to wear some make-up, which was when I joined the university, I started to get very bad at it!
  2. Mathematics is all about concentration, you can't solve equations if you're constantly worried about your appearance.
  3. The first thought that comes to mind is maybe the make-up takes time away from homework and studying.
  4. I'm curious as to how/why you noticed this fact. I think that the girls that wear makeup excessively (re-appplying more than 3 times a day) are focussing on their image and other things, and not the studies. Besides I think that girls that wear only a little makeup, (a small amount of eye-liner daily, and occasionally more such as on a special occasion) look far better than the girls that wear makeup excessively, as in a lot everyday, and are constantly re-applying it. That's not to say that girls that wear a lot of it are in any way ugly or not good looking, I just personally feel that when girls have less of it, it shows of their natural beauty
  5. I wear make-up and i took advanced calculus in college. Your little study means nothing. It happened once in one small group, it does not say much statistical wise at all.

  7. I wear makeup and am considered to be very good looking and I get A's in all my math courses. Also, stats is one of the easier math courses.

Actually I met many pretty female math majors. It seems like the unkept ones are the ones who are engineering majors who have to take all those math classes.
