Why do people still bother, when anyone can just divorce anyone, and take all their stuff? Me and my SO are happy to be as good as Husband and wife and we have a child together but we have both agreed that getting married is just pretty pointless. His parents are not married and have been together for 25 years. Marriage isn't what it used to be, today it just seems like an expensive fancy ceremony and it's more about the big day then it is about the commitment. I am from the UK, so we don't have the same laws as in the US so maybe marriage means different laws over there? For a start we don't need health insurance here. @ X Ugh I'm not a feminist, thanks.

there's a lot of emphasis put into the wedding day and not much thought put into spending the rest of their lives together and how to make a marriage work.

- I would have thought that the mark of an official commitment is not that you are unable to get out of it, but rather that you have the option and just never want to.
- I'm an old-fashioned gal. I want to get married. Shacking up isn't for me.
- I bang "wives" all the time. People just don't have morals these days!
- Well, marriage doesn't mean anything to people who are allowed to be married. But there are members of the LGBTQ community who can not. That means their loved ones might not have health insurance, inheritance, child care rights, etc. Also, it's really easy to get a prenup if your concerned about divorce
- before i am labelled a marriage hater, i don't hate the idea of the joining of two people.
I just don't like the institutionalization of marriage and the governments role, it's more a business. - Every couple is different, and if both of you agree that marriage is not necessary, then it's no one else's business.
The only thing is the child. Some day, he/she will ask, why you two aren't married if all their friends parents are married. So you'd have to answer that. The other thing is, if you and your s/o do split, you will still have to go through child custody issues and child support just like a married couple.
I agree that people (esp. women) tend to put a lot more thought into the wedding day than they do in the actual marriage. lol - Well i live in the US, i can't speak for foreign places but I was married and divorce. I didnt give up on the whole marriage I just want to make sure i'm financially stable and get married to some one who doesn't give up and I find good qualities in them and they accept mine
- You don't have to have a fancy ceremony. Mark Zuckererg got married in his backyard.
Men who respect women ask to marry them. Your SO isn't that into you. Just admit it. Feminists like you ruined our society. - lol, you get tax benefits and such and also at work people stop gossiping that you are gay.
- There are many sensible reasons to not get married. However, those people who do get married might do so because they think society expects them to and they aren't willing to not get married because of it. Similarly, if they were raised to think that marriage was right and not getting married wasn't they might pursue marriage for that reason, I suppose. Another reason why people might get married is for health insurance and other financial benefits. For example, people in the military get paid more if they are married than those who don't for doing the same work, if I'm not mistaken.
- Legal protection. That's all. If your man dies unless you are in his will you wont get squat. Pensions you wont get squat. Marriage is a legal document, a wedding is a party.
