...or is that a myth, and the reality is that girls tend to roll their eyes whenever anyone pulls out a guitar.

I know I am. But I also roll my eyes when someone who thinks themselves a guitarist pulls one out. I think you have to have talent and your own flair to be a true guitarist. I don't know how to describe it, other than many just sound so generic. That said, I'm always interested to hear someone play for the first time and seeing their attitude about their playing, so I always give them a fair chance. Are you a musician? Have you ever been to a music store and heard some guy trying to show off on the drums, and to someone who doesn't know, it sounds good - they keep the beat consistent and it comes together well. To someone that does know, they know right off the bat this guy's a beginner doing one of the most basic of exercises. They hear the split second of hesitation, they notice the change in tempo and it's...blah...nothing special. Yet these guys think they look hot and are practically charming the pants off the ladies. That's where the eye rolling comes in.
Other Answers:
- no, they're attracted to the drummer.
- yep, I read that study...a handsome 20 year guy walked around with a guitar, sportsbag, and just empty-hand and asked women for their numbers...
more women gave them their numbers to when he had the guitar...
http://www.outsideonline.com/news-from-the-field/Study-Women-like-men-with-guitars.html - Only the hot ones. A short chubby guy does not become hotter just because of a guitar.
- everybody is attracted to a musician especially a guitarist or lead singer. Talent=awesome
- I am personally attracted to the guitarist only because he can not only play music on an instrument, hopefully he sings as well. We fantasize about them writing songs for us, making us a mix tape, or just dedicating songs to us. If the vocalist plays guitar then that's a major plus!!! But in my personal experience, musicians and most artists alike are not very good with relationships.
- I've played drums, bass, and the knob-twiddling midi-sequencer thing in bands and I can safely say that, even though I'm of rugged looks, 6' 4", muscular, fairly well-off, and have long grunge-hair, that the girls always go for the singer/front-man.
Helloooooooooooo Ladies...... - Of course women want to get to know a guitarist. They rightly assume he has some Drummer friends to whom they are hoping to be introduced.

Added @GOD: As usual, sir, you show yourself to be quite fallible. Read your linked article again and you will see that more françaises gave him their phone numbers while he had a guitar CASE. Not a guitar. So clearly the young, inexperienced French ladies assumed he was carrying sticks, brushes, a tamborim, and a pork pie in the CASE. Not a guitar!

- Been playing in bands for a long time. If all of the guys looked the same girls would go for the front man first. But in reality they go for the best looking guy in the band regardless of what instrument he plays. That's why I always make sure every guy in the bands I join are ugly ( :
