- It is a compulsion that leads to an addiction that, left unchecked, leads ultimately to death. No one chooses to become a drunk.
That said, I do understand what you are asking. When faced with the compulsion, alcoholics do make the choice to take a drink. It's a very confusing issue, and I work for a substance abuse treatment center. Alcoholism is a recognized mental illness. - yes I think its an illness but its not like the person has no choice
- It is more of a bad choice, which we all make.
- I agree with Judd about physical addiction, but to me it's a bad decision gone wrong. Avoidance feeds addiction and it is an addictive behavioral pattern brought on by stress and an inability to cope whether it's a subconscious or a conscious avoidance of the stress. Bad decision initially and turns into an addiction physically, mentally, emotionally, etc.
- I think its both an illness and bad choice, alcoholism also runs high genetically
- Bad choice
